Chassis shortage in key markets

Cargo ChassisImports coming into the United States in December increased. We’re experiencing a significant chassis shortage in several key markets, including Chicago. This will affect customers with imports. Read on for more information.
  • A surge of shipments coming into U.S. ports and moving to rail terminals means containers are being grounded and stacked at terminals as they wait for chassis. The circumstance at each terminal is slightly different and not each chassis pool is deficit.
  • As it pertains to Chicago G4, we’ve received communications that the Union Pacific, BNSF/LPC and CN Harvey chassis pools are tight. Each company is handling communications a bit differently.
  • We’ve also received a notice that Norfolk Southern Railway has issued embargo on freight billed to Austell via the Memphis and Shreveport gateways and that all shipments originating at the ports of Charleston or Garden City destined to Austell will be embargoed. This means they’re not accepting shipments.
  • The Cargo Services team is working with teams to stay updated on client freight.
  • This situation is expected to last several weeks. There is still considerable import freight at the east and west coast ports to move inland.
Cargo Services will not be held responsible for demurrage or detention charges related to chassis issues.
Cargo Services clients, please contact your representative with questions as it pertains to your shipment.
