Yangtze River dam projects: Plan now to avoid cargo delays

We received a notice from Maersk yesterday updating us on the Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam maintenance plans for 2018. Maersk strongly recommends (and we agree) that clients prepare cargo delivery plans now to avoid potential loss due to the delays. If you think your cargo will be impacted, let’s discuss options to manage the least disruption to your supply chain. Please call your Cargo Services representative or contact our office directly.

  • The maintenance for north channel of the Three Gorges Dam will start Feb 19, 2018 and last for 33 days.
  • The maintenance for number one channel of the Gezhouba Dam will start from Feb. 26, 2018 and last for 20 days.

Maersk Line says it will devote efforts to minimize the impact to customers. Three Gorges and Gezhouba Dam projects are located on China’s Yangtze River. Last year, cargo ships transported a record year for the volume of cargo transported on the river.

  • For import shipments – Maersk currently foresees prolonged pending times at Shanghai for barge connections for transit to Chongqing/Yibin.
  • For export shipments, the transit time from Chongqing/Yibin to Shanghai would be impacted as well.
